Colorado slows medical marijuana crackdown

Colorado appears to be giving up on its effort to crack down on medical marijuana growers who are using a legal loophole to grow high numbers of pot plants without the kind of oversight faced by commercial growers. 

The Colorado Department of Health and Environment said in a statement Monday that it was reviewing responses to letters it sent earlier this month to about 2,300 doctors who have recommended medical marijuana. The letters sought medical justification for recommending more than six plants to any patient.

Colorado's state constitution allows medical marijuana patients up to six plants, though doctors can give permission for more plants. The constitution also allows patients to designate a "caregiver" to grow the pot on their behalf. Colorado has about 3,300 designated caregivers, registered under a model that wasn't affected by the passage of recreational pot in 2012.

Tens of thousands celebrate marijuana holiday 4/20 across US

DENVER –  Tens of thousands of revelers raised joints, pipes and vaporizer devices to the sky Sunday at a central Denver park in a defiant toast to the April 20 pot holiday, a once-underground celebration that stepped into the mainstream in the first state in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana.

The 4:20 p.m. smoke-out in the shadow of the Colorado capitol was the capstone of an Easter weekend dedicated to cannabis in states across the country. Although it is still against the law to publicly smoke marijuana in Colorado, police only reported 63 citations or arrests on Sunday, 47 for marijuana consumption.

"It feels good not to be persecuted anymore," said Joe Garramone, exultantly smoking a joint while his 3-year-old daughter played on a vast lawn crowded with fellow smokers.

The Garramone family came from Hawaii, among the tens of thousands who crowded into various cannabis-themed extravaganzas, from a marijuana industry expo called the Cannabis Cup at a trade center north of downtown to 4/20-themed concerts at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater. Acts included Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dogg.

Allstar Blake Griffin Endorses Medical Marijuana Use In The NBA

In an interview with Rolling Stone yesterday, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers voiced his support of medical marijuana use to treat pain in the NBA.  Currently, the NBA has strict penalties for drug use, which typically lead to suspensions and fines. It was only in 2011 that the NBA stopped testing for marijuana use in the off-season, but now that marijuana is in the limelight, its place in the NBA, as a form of medical treatment for pain, has come into question.

Cannabis Cup - Denver, CO - 4/19 &4/20

In 2014, HIGH TIMES will return to the Mile High City for our fourth event at the Denver Mart. Our first two events in Denver were Medical Cannabis Cups, restricted to medical patients only. But Colorado voters legalized adult, recreational use of marijuana in the 2012 election, which resulted in our most successful Cannabis Cup ever. We now host the US Cannabis Cup, an event open to all adults.

New this year is the Cannabis Freedom Trail! Visit participating pot shops, sample the strain they have entered, then vote on Sunday for your fave. The shop with the most votes will be awarded the People's Cup.

Please note that only those 18 and over with ID may attend the event, 21 and over with ID to enter the smoking area. Those 18 and over with a Colorado medical card will also be able to enter the smoking area.

Doors open at 11AM both Saturday and Sunday.

Cannabis Cup Time in Colorado

With Colorado’s recent legalization of the recreational use of marijuana, ticket sales for Denver’s fifth annual Cannabis Cup this month are expected to double, according to event organizers.

The roving trade show, sponsored by High Times magazine, has already sold around 25,000 tickets to its Denver event, Dan Skye, the magazine’s editorial director and a spokesman for the show, said on the telephone. That’s almost 10,000 more than last year, Mr. Skye said, with 30,000 visitors expected in total over the weekend, April 19 and 20.

In fact, the event has grown so large, organizers were prompted to change venues from the Exdo Event Center to Denver Mart, where there will be plenty of outdoor space for, well, sampling.

Booths lining the outside recreation area will represent around 250 dispensaries, growers and pot shops, with lots of merchandise to be tested by those 21 and older, and those 18 and older with a medical use card. (WE WILL HAVE BOOTH SET UP on BOTH DAYS..SO stop by and see what we having cooking)
