U.S. Issues Marijuana Guidelines for Banks

[Source: NY Times]

The Obama administration on Friday issued guidelines intended to give banks confidence that they will not be punished if they provide services to legitimate marijuana businesses in states that have legalized the medical or recreational use of the drug, even though it remains illicit under federal law.

The guidance, which requires banks to vigorously monitor their marijuana-industry customers, was provided by the Treasury Department and the Justice Department in separate advisories. The policy does not grant immunity from prosecution or civil penalties to banks that serve legal marijuana businesses. But it directs prosecutors and regulators to give priority to cases only where financial institutions have failed to adhere to the guidance.

Still, the banking industry was quick to say that the new guidelines would not be sufficient to make banks feel at ease about opening accounts for or granting loans to marijuana businesses because the drug would still be illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Get on Board! TV spots pitch medical marijuana..

[Source: USAToday]

Late-night TV, which has enticed us with hard-sell offers for the amazing Ginsu knife and equally incredible hair loss remedies, now has another offer some can't refuse: a way to get medical marijuana.

Comcast, the nation's largest cable operator, has agreed to run an ad on its local cable systems in New Jersey, Massachusetts and greater Chicago that promote a service that links people seeking legal medical marijuana with doctors able to prescribe it.

The campaign is one of the first examples — possibly the first — of commercial broadcast advertising related to marijuana. The ads begin airing this month in New Jersey and will start next month in the other media markets.

This Is Why Marijuana Should Be Legal Everywhere

[Source: The Huffington Post]

A Gallup poll released on Tuesday reveals that for the first time in history, Americans are more in favor of legalizing marijuana than criminalizing it. 2013 has markedly been a successful year for marijuana legalization, with Colorado and Washington both passing laws to decriminalize the drug. Now, 58 percent of Americans are in favor allowing the plant to be legal.

With the majority of Americans agreeing that marijuana should be legalized, we've gathered up eight reasons why those who are still on the fence about the natural plant should possibly reconsider their feelings.

See what the 8 reasons are here:  READ MORE HERE

Colorado troopers get training on spotting drivers under influence of pot

[Source: TheDenverPost]

Colorado State Patrol troopers cited 60 people in January for driving offenses in which marijuana was believed to be involved, a CSP sergeant said Monday in reporting the first such numbers in the state.

Trends in stoned driving have proved difficult for state officials to track, and the State Patrol began keeping tallies on impaired-driving cases involving marijuana only in January. In that month, stoned-driving citations made up about 15 percent of the total impaired-driving citations for the month, Sgt. Mike Baker said.

"This is the first year we've had such specific, quantifiable totals for marijuana-related citations," Baker wrote in an e-mail. "We won't be able to make an educated, reasonable assessment about the effect of the new marijuana laws for a few years at the earliest."

CU-Boulder to close campus on 4/20 for third straight year

[SOURCE: TheDenverPost]

For the third year in a row, the University of Colorado plans to close its Boulder campus on April 20 to curtail an "unwanted 4/20 gathering," according to a statement released Friday morning by Chancellor Phil DiStefano.

In recent years, campus officials have been trying to extinguish the annual pot smokeout, which at its height drew some 10,000 tokers to Norlin Quadrangle, by closing the campus to outsiders, spreading fishy smelling fertilizer on the quad and enforcing marijuana laws.

From noon to 6 p.m. on April 20, CU faculty, students and staff are required to show their Buff OneCards, or CU identification cards, to enter the campus, DiStefano wrote.

Visitors with official business are required to obtain a visitor's pass to enter the campus.
