Is super weed, super bad?

[By Caleb Hellerman, CNN]

The glossy spread in "High Times" a magazine for pot devotees, showcases the "strongest strains on Earth." The most recent rankings are topped by "Head Cheese," which is grown in a hydroponic system and fed with a carefully calibrated dose of synthetic nutrients.

On "Weed Tracker," a California-based website where medical marijuana users share notes, cannabis connoisseurs sing the praises of "Sensi Star" and rave about the "Grand Daddy Purple, which tastes like a berry vanilla smoothie." Another medical site touts a bud "finished with a subtle fruit effect ... offering a deep body stone with a creative mind high," and warns it is "not for newbies or low-tolerance patients."

The descriptions evoke images of a wine-tasting club -- albeit one with a few eccentrics. But increasingly it seems the most valued trait among these weed admirers is pure knockout power.

"Tried the rest, found the BEST!!!"

[Review by: nytr4splant, August 7, 2013]

"Wow, I can't say enough about this place. This is the best weed in town by far. The LA woman is KILLER! It is super long lasting and has an awesome classic Indica high. The prophet and OG Cheese are top notch as well. I am curious about the other strains but frankly I can't bring myself to try anything else. The prices are above average, but the given the quality it is a bargain. Plus they have daily specials that bring things down, and they give you 50 dollars off for every 500 you spend. The staff is super chill. Nick (I think he is the manager), is quick with a recommendation and asks what you thought the next time you come in. All in all I have yet to find anything wrong with the place and will give it my business as long as I am in Boulder."

Recreational Marijuana Sales Banned In More Than Two Dozen Colorado Cities

[Source: HuffingtonPost]

Although Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed several historic measures to implement marijuana legalization in the state, establishing Colorado as the world's first legal, regulated and taxed marijuana market for adults back in May, many of the Centennial State's cities are banning retail legal weed.

On Tuesday, Colorado Springs, the state's second largest city, is expected to vote to ban retail recreational marijuana stores, The Associated Press reports. Four of nine Colorado Springs City Council members have already said they will vote against retail weed stores. But even if legal marijuana sales are approved, Mayor Steve Bach has vowed to veto recreational pot shops in the city limits.

The City Council could just ban recreational marijuana sales altogether or allow marijuana sales but also pass a moratorium on opening pot shops until after Colorado voters weigh in on approving tax rates for recreational marijuana in the state this November. But according to the Gazette, Bach has said he'd even veto the moratorium option.

"This is so important to our community and in our best interest that I will respectfully need to veto anything short of opting out," Bach said in a Gazette report

Recreational pot sales in Colorado cities that opt-in can begin on Jan. 1, 2014

Gov. Pat Quinn to sign bill legalizing medical marijuana in Illinois

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will sign legislation making the state the 20th in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana.

His remarks Thursday will focus on providing relief to the seriously ill, including veterans.
The Chicago Democrat will also tout the legislation's strict standards, which experts say are among the nation's toughest. That's according to a copy of details obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

The measure outlines a four-year pilot program that requires patients and caregivers to undergo background checks and sets provisions for state-regulated dispensaries. The proposal says seriously ill patients can be allowed up to 2.5 ounces at a time.

Jim Champion, a veteran with multiple sclerosis who's advocated for medical cannabis, has been invited to speak at Thursday's bill signing.

"Great Peaceful, Atmosphere!" - What Patients are saying about North Boulder!

[Review by: Oldschoolsativa420, July 22, 2013]

"Went in yesterday for my first time patient visit. Upon arrival i noticed the place to very peaceful, quiet, and serene. perfect environment for unwinding after a long day at the office or at home. When i arrived i was greeted by the hostess/budtender who was very was warm, and helpful. Gave me the "Grand Tour" as i drilled her with a enormous amount of questions. I found that the bud tender was very knowledgeable on the large variety or various strains that they provide. I had plenty of 90 and 100% Sativa's at home, and just wanted to find something a little bit relaxing to work into my evening med strains. The budtender threw out about 5 or 6 jars of different Indica dominant strains. She suggested the "Prophet 77" as good choice, and i went with that! Picking this strain was not easy as there were so many to choose from. The variety, appearance, smell, and overall presentation was phenomenal to the least!!

My selective strain of Prophet 77 was very sticky and had quite a few really nice trichones, and smelt really nice.

So loaded up the bong (not to tight, not to loose) just right and took a good hit!

The taste was very good and aromatic the effects were relaxing and calm, but not couch locked calm! Really nice start the evening and get ready to wind the night down and get ready for bed!!

I will be back to check out some of the other Sativa strains that they have available, and they have quite a few to sort through!!"

THC Can Protect From Multiple Brain Deficits

[Source: MedicalJane.com]

Cannabis research has continued to grow in popularity in recent years, and it has recently been suggested that THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) offers protection for the brain.

In a study published in September 2012, researchers determined that a single ultra-low dosage of THC (.002mg/kg) applied 1-7 days before or 1-3 days after a neuronal insult can protect the brain from a number of cognitive deficits.

The deficit-causing insults that were explored were as follows: Repeated exposure to MDMA (ecstasy), carbon monoxide exposure, and anesthesia cause by pentobarbital, an anesthetic which is sometimes used for execution.

They found that the one THC treatment protected the brain from these cognitive deficits for 7 weeks.
